Cant find "real" location of folder under W7
I just installed an older app on W7 (Plam Desktop for old Treo) and was able to get it working. When I was setting it up I noticed some strangeness having to do with the data file location and would like to understand this better (to get a clearer understanding of W7 inner workings). On XP the user data file was located in c:\Palm\UserName. On W7 The UserName folder is not showing up (through explorer).I have show hidden files, show unknown extensions, show OS files selected, but even doing a search for the UserName folder or the files within it (with search for hidden files selected) yields no hits. The stranger part is if I open Palm Desktop and click import it opens in c:\Program Files\Palm\UserName folder and If I back-track the path I can see this is "really" where it is (although the icon has a little lock on it). Also Properties for this folder show the same path.Pasting this path into explorer or the search box does not open in the folderCan someone explain where this folder is and how to access it/copy it etc under W7.Thanks

Hi JackSome older incompatible programs will try to write and store user data in the restricted Program Files\program folder. This creates a conflict with the security components in later versions of Windows. When this happens, Windows will silently virtualize these files and redirect them to a non-restricted location under the users folder. Although these files will appear to be in Program Files, their actual location will be in the C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\program name folder. This function is completely transparent to the program and allows the incompatible program to still perform the writes to these files and work properly. When you select the Program Files\Palm folder, look on the Command Bar and you should see a new button named Compatibility Files. Click this button and it will open the location where these files are stored.Hope this helps.Thank You for using Windows 7 Ronnie Vernon MVP
